Buffalo: Easy to get to, great to live in

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Some of the cheapest airfares, one of the few strong real estate markets in the nation and a top arts and cultural center. Yep, that’s Buffalo.
Airfares to Buffalo Niagara International Aiport rank among the cheapest of the nation’s top 100 airports, averaging just $254.21, according to U.S. Department of Transportation. At a time of skyrocketing ticket prices, this makes Buffalo a very desireable destination (think Buffalo Homecoming - June 26-29!!).
The Buffalo Niagara residential real estate market is one of the only markets in the nation that is not tanking. According to the National Association of Realtors, this area is “poised to weather the national housing sales crisis better than most.” One of the reasons for this is that the market was not hyper-inflated to begin with. However, this may also be due to a growing national trend to reduce commute time and costs. According to an NPR report, communities with short commutes are faring better that ones with long drives into the city. As the price per gallon continues to skyrocket, this trend is likely to continue — and as
And once you get here and get settled in, you’ll find yourself in the Number One arts destination mid-size city in the nation, according to American-Style magazine.
And in case you missed it — the tables have turned. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Buffalo area outperformed 15 Florida metro areas in job growth over the past year. Buffalo and Niagara counties added 2,500 jobs between January 2007 and January 2008, placing it 101st out of 310 U.S. metro areas in terms of raw job growth (Business First, 3/24/2008).
Is that enough good news for one issue? Is it compelling enough to motivate you to invite a few friends and family members to Buffalo this summer to take a fresh look at Buffalo during the Buffalo Homecoming on June 26-29? We sincerely hope so!

Brian Reilly Comes Back to Buffalo as Economic Development Chief

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Brian ReillyBrian Reilly is back. And that is great news for Buffalo.

The mayor’s new chief economic development officer was born near the Lovejoy neighborhood, grew up in Williamsville, left for Notre Dame and has returned to Buffalo after 20 years with an impressive turnaround track record in Cleveland and Milwaukee.

His job is to “develop a new road map to grow the city economy, boost job creation and enhance work force development.” He is absolutely passionate about making a difference in his hometown.

Keep your eye on this guy and lend him a hand when possible. He really “gets” economic development — the importance of green, the role of cultural tourism, the nature of our assets and how to leverage them… He is the right guy for the job.

Welcome home, Brian. You epitomize why we want those who have left to consider coming back. The energy and enthusiasm that you bring with you are rivaled only by the experience and expertise that you gained while away. Buffalo needs more expats like Brian Reilly to come back.

Bring Home the Herd

April 14th, 2008 · No Comments

This is a campaign — not an event. It’s an effort by the Buffalo Homecoming Team to entice 5000 folks who are in Buffalo By Choice and think this place is great, to each invite four or five friends and family members to join them this summer in Buffalo on June 26-29 for the Homecoming. Why? To take a fresh look at Buffalo, to understand why Buffalo is a land of opportunity and a great place to live, work, play and invest, and quite simply — to have FUN!

If you want to be a Buffalo Ambassador and help Bring Home the Herd, here’s the run down:

Buffalo Homecoming is four straight days of fun things to do in Buffalo with friends and family. Start out by going out to dinner Thursday evening at any one of dozens of our many great locally-owned iconic restaurants. Then discover on Friday at the Career Fair at The Statler that there are not only jobs in Buffalo, but also a burgeoning high tech New Economy — go figure! Then have a picnic supper on the back steps of the beautiful Albright-Knox and get a bird’s eye view of Buffalo’s amazing arts & cultural scene — just voted the BEST of any city of its size in the nation by XXXX! Then walk across the parkway to Shakespeare in the Park or into Gusto at the Gallery for more free fun. On Saturday, Re-Discover Buffalo. Find a corner of Buffalo that you know nothing about and take a tour. Or take a peek inside the lofts on the Downtown Housing Tour. Be sure to stay downtown for a bite to eat so you’re not late for the immense Buffalo Homecoming Block Party — we’re taking over the entire Theatre District! An outdoor stage will feature iconic Buffalo bands, and there will be something for everyone up and down the block. Plus you can meet up with fellow alums or old friends under the banner of dozens of schools, clubs and organizations. It’s a reunion, remember?! Sleep in on Sunday, but don’t miss Sunday Brunch. Quizmaster Dennis George will entertain us with his Buffalo Trivia Quiz, in which you can line up against celebrities to win great prizes! On your way out, be sure to pick up a Buffalo keepsake at the From the Heart of Buffalo Fair, so you remember to celebrate Buffalo all year long, no matter where you live.

Now doesn’t that sound like a blast? Pick up the phone, send an e-mail or go to http://buffalohomecoming.com/tellafriend.html – just five friends or family members, guys! Plan a great time in Buffalo during the last weekend in June.

Do the math. If 5,000 of us each invite 5 guests to this terrific party, and only a third can actually make it, we’ve still got 10,000 people celebrating the best of Buffalo on June 26-29 this year. Wow!!

Some of these folks may move back. But even if some simply go back to wherever they live with a new, positive attitude about Buffalo and its potential, we will gauge this grassroots effort a success. Don’t you think?
